ELBERT COUNTY, Colo. — Three people were killed, including two children, in a crash that shut down eastbound Interstate 70 for several hours in Elbert County Wednesday afternoon, according to the Colorado State Patrol.
The crash, involving a blue Subaru Forester and a semi-truck hauling a trailer, was reported around 2:31 p.m. Wednesday near milepost 348 west of Limon. Investigators say the Subaru was in the right eastbound lane and rear-ended the semi, which was driving slowly with its hazard lights on in the same lane.

Three passengers in the Subaru — a 47-year-old, a 13-year-old and a 10-year-old — died. The driver — a 62-year-old man — was taken to a local area hospital. CSP said all four people are from Montana.
The driver of the semi was not injured, according to the CSP. It was not clear why the semi was driving with its hazards on.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
The eastbound lanes of I-70 were closed for roughly 30 miles, and traffic was detoured off the highway and onto US 36 at Byers. The roadway reopened around 7:30 p.m.

Editor's note: The Colorado State Patrol previously reported that four people were killed. The agency issued a correction, saying three people were killed. This story has been corrected.
